Why Patients Choose Invisalign®

The most significant benefit of the Invisalign® clear aligner system is that it works! Over time, you will see your teeth shifting into a more balanced state of alignment as you wear the aligners. In the end, your treatment will reveal the beautiful smile you desire.

Some of the other benefits of Invisalign® include:

  • Shorter treatment time than metal braces, 12-18 months on average
  • Discreet appearance
  • No food restrictions
  • Fewer visits to the dentist during treatment (every six weeks)
  • Removable aligners for photos, meetings, meals, and special occasions
  • Less tooth sensitivity

If you’ve often dreamed of improving your smile, but thought you were too old for orthodontics, Invisalign® may be the right choice for you. Not only is straightening your teeth better for your long-term oral health, it will also improve your self-confidence and give you more reasons to smile. This can help benefit you both personally and professionally.

How Invisalign® Works

Teeth may seem quite stable in your mouth, but they will gradually shift when gentle, yet constant pressure is applied. Braces apply this force with the use of permanently affixed brackets and adjustable wires, while Invisalign® uses clear, plastic aligner trays.

Using a digital model of your smile, the Invisalign® system determines your ideal smile outcome and designs a set of incremental aligners to get you from point A to point B. Every two weeks you will receive a new set of aligners, which will apply the constant pressure needed to shift your teeth.

The changes from one set of aligners to the next are very small, so you will not notice the same sensitivity that patients with traditional braces feel when their wires are tightened. By wearing the aligners 20-22 hours each day, the teeth gradually move into a more optimal position, and proper tooth alignment is achieved.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign®?

Invisalign® works best on patients who suffer from mild to moderate malocclusion (misalignment). This designation usually includes most cases of gapped and overlapping/overcrowded teeth. If you have severe alignment issues, such as a bite disorder, traditional braces may be better suited. Traditional braces are also best if you have teeth that need to be rotated or shifted vertically.

In order to consider Invisalign®, you should be free from any outstanding oral health problems, such as untreated tooth decay or gum disease. If Dr. Dufera finds any oral health concerns during your consultation, he will create a treatment plan to help you achieve a good state of health before you can begin your course of treatment.

In order to qualify for Invisalign®, your teeth and jaw should be finished growing (it is not ideal for developing children). You should also have a deep desire to improve your teeth alignment. Because successful treatment is dependent on patients wearing the aligners for a specified number of hours per day, Invisalign® won’t work unless you are vigilant about following the guidelines.

What Every Patient Should Know About Invisalign®

Wearing clear, removable aligners may be more convenient than metal braces, but it requires a greater level of patient involvement. How well you adhere to “the rules” of Invisalign® will determine the success of your outcome, and how healthy your teeth remain.

In order to have a successful outcome, Invisalign® patients must:

  1. Wear their aligners at all times when not eating or cleaning the teeth (20-22 hours per day). This includes wearing them while you sleep.
  2. Brush and floss teeth after every meal, snack, and beverage.
  3. Consume no food or drinks when wearing the aligners; only plain water is allowed.
  4. Clean the aligners properly every day.
